A slot is a location in a database that is consumed by one or more consumers (replication slots). A replication slot has an identifier that distinguishes it from other databases, and persists independently of the connection using it; therefore, it is crash-safe. Typically, several logical replication slots exist for a single database in a PostgreSQL cluster. Each replication slot has its own state, allowing different consumers to receive changes from different points in the database change stream. The corresponding consumer can then apply the received change to its own database.
