Learn to read other players – One of the key skills in poker is reading your opponents and their actions. This is largely achieved by studying how they play their hands and looking for patterns. If a player is bluffing all the time then it is likely they have weak hands, whereas if they check frequently then they probably have a strong hand.
Understand what hands win – While it is true that luck plays a huge role in the outcome of any given poker hand, there are certain hands that tend to beat other hands more frequently than others. For example, if you have pocket kings and the flop comes A-8-5 you are in trouble. This is because a player who has a J in their hand will likely beat yours.
Similarly, if you have two unmatched cards and someone else has a pair then they will have the best hand. This is because the pair gives them a straight, which is a sequence of cards that skip around in rank and are all from one suit.
